cruising the coast to yalta
Sunday we had our cheese fritters and honey and took off for Yalta. Dash was a little concerned about the drive as its high on the cliff tops along the coast - no sweat for a farm boy.
The drive was pretty straightforward with the GPS earning its keep again. The tiny Skoda Fabia was kicking some butt and we made great time to Foros - an old church high on the Crimean peninsula. It was the big Orthodox celebration so it was chocka with people. I scampered and went to take in the view while Dash paid her respects. Stunning views over an area that was the favourite holiday spots for many past Russian leaders like Brezhnev and Khrushchev. Plenty of green tree’s and sun so I can see why they made the trip from Moscow.
Back on the road in 30 minutes and we were soon driving through Yalta - 3 times as we missed the turns twice! The GPS nearly got “unwound” as well.
Yalta is an interesting, Bohemian, styled place but its overcome by tourists and the prerequisite crap food and high cost. It could have been a great place, but it lacks a decent beach and its way too much kitsch for me. Luckily we only had an evening there - but we took off out of the central area and found a great little east european place - funnily on a table next to some grandmothers from Australia and England - out for the night after their cruise ship docked in port.
The restarant in the photo above sums it up..... and the beach for that matter. Good to go but there are plenty of great places in Crimea I’d vote for first.
